Acne and Acne Scars Management
Acne is one of the most prevalent skin conditions. It affects up to 80% of people in their teens and twenties, and up to 5% of older adults. Acne scars are caused by the body's inflammatory response to acne lesions. The best way to prevent scars is to treat acne early, and as long as necessary. River City Cosmetic Medicine Clinic uses the most advanced, state-of-the-art technology to combat acne and acne scarring. The key to the success of the acne clearing programs lies in the even balance of a combination of different cosmetic procedures and a home skin care regime.
A combination of treatments such as Microdermabrasion, Photodynamic Therapy, Chemical Peels, Blue/Red Light Therapy, Laser/Pulsed Light Therapy, Skin Needling or Dermal Filler can be individualised related to the severity of acne or acne scars. Each procedure has its own risks and benefits, and several procedures are normally combined to create a clear and smooth skin appearance.
Microdermabrasion - With Crystal and Diamond Tips
Microdermabrasion is a deep exfoliation treatment designed to smooth and soften the texture of the skin. A diamond tipped handpiece combined with crystal technology is moved over the skin, which gently vacuums away dead skin cells debris which can clog pores. Although the face is the most common area treated, other sun damaged areas such as the neck, chest, arms and hands may be treated. Microdermabrasion is effective not only for the treatment of skin imperfections but also as part of regular skin care. After Microdermabrasion, skin care products will be absorbed more deeply into the dermis. This simple, non-invasive lunchtime procedure in combination with a professional home skin care regime provides impressive, affordable results.
Benefits of Microdermabrasion:
- Enhances poor, dull skin texture
- Reduces large pores
- Assists in clearing up congested skin
- Polishes and refines skin
- Reduces skin discolouration
- Softens and modifies fine lines
- Maintains healthy looking skin
- Better cosmetic product absorption
Microdermabrasion can treat:
- Acne/Acne Scars
- Open Pores or Thickened Skin

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) For Acne and Sun Damaged Skin
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a combination of ALA cream and Light Therapy which creates a phototoxic reaction and distraction of abnormal cells. This therapy destroys abnormal skin cells and allows normal skin cells to replace them. PDT can be used on all skin types, colours and age groups.
PDT can be used to treat a range of skin conditions:
- Cystic Acne, Acne Vulgaris and Oily Skin
- Sebaceous Gland Hyperplasia
- Rosacea
- Seborrheic Keratoesis
- Sun damaged skin ( Solar Keratoses)
- Uneven skin tone
- Warts
- Superficial skin cancer
Why Use it?
- Excellent cosmetic results
- Good resolution of underlying problem
- Minimal side effects
- High patient satisfaction
- Simple and controlled
After treatment redness is present for a few days. It is very important to avoid sun exposure for 48 hours and use of sun protection cream SPF30+ is essential.
Advanced Cosmeceuticals Peels
Chemical Peeling is a safe, non-invasive, intensive exfoliation process which creates changes in the skin through three mechanisms.
- Stimulation of the top layer of skin growth through removal of the outer layer of skin.
- Distraction of specific layers of damaged skin (deep exfoliation).
- Induction of inflammatory reactions deeper in the tissue and production of new collagen.
Light to Medium depth chemical peels have the benefit of not causing any down time or irritation and can achieve the same results as stronger peels but will have to be applied in series. Types of professional peels are individualised to your skin condition and imperfection.
Peels in combination with Microdermabasion or Pulsed Light can give very impressive results.
Peels can be used to treat a range of skin conditions:
- Acne, problematic skins
- Excessively oily skins
- Congested skins
- Skin blemishes and uneven tone
- Superficial scars and acne scars
- Dry and rough textured skins
- Hyperpigmentation skins
- Photodamaged skins
- Skin maintenance
Skin Needling
Skin Needling is an exciting new treatment known as Collagen Induction Therapy. The skin roller needles skin to a depth of 2 mm causing multiple small puncture wounds to the dermis. This dermal damage induces the release of growth factors that stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin. Remodelling of this new collagen continues for 12 months after each treatment.
The skin is usually red or swollen for one or two days and most patients are able to return to work within 48 hours after treatment.
Improvement in the appearance of scars and lines is achieved through a series of Skin Needling treatments, 2 months apart. Skin needling can be performed safely on all skin types and colours.
Skin Needling Treatment has been shown to:
- Improve depressed Acne Scarring
- Improve the appearance of chickenpox scars
- Improve Skin Texture
- Smooth Wrinkles and reduce deep lines
- Improve the appearance of Stretch Marks
Dermal Filler
There are many types of dermal filler that can be injected into acne scars to raise the surface of the skin and give a smoother look.
